He immigrated from Hungary in 1906 or 1908 and filed his papers for naturalization in 1916. On his marriage certificate, he is listed as John Brown but signed his names as Johan Braun. At the time of his marriage, he was living at 393 Madison St. in Buffalo.

In 1910, he and his wife were living at 10 Josephine St. in Buffalo, ward 16 and he is a shoemaker. He is listed as John Brown here. Also in the household is George Brown, 21, who is listed as a son but must be a brother or other relative as John is only 24.
