John Brady was born 14 July 1864 in Finnea, Cavan County. John came to the United States sometime between 1888 and 1890 . He married Mary McCartin in January 1895 in New Jersey. He was a 30 year old coachman at the time of his wedding. At the turn of the century John and Mary were living in East Orange, New Jersey with two children (Thomas and Bernard) and his brother, Bartholomew. By 1910 they had three sons: Thomas Joseph (b. 4 May 1896 ), Bernard I. (b. April 1900 ) and John E. (b. c. 1906 ). Their sons were all born in New Jersey.
John Brady of 165 McKinley Ave., East Orange, founder of Brady Taxi service, East Orange, now owned by his son, Bernard I. Brady, died Thursday at his home of a brief illness. He was 97. Born in County Cavan, Ireland, he came to East Orange 75 years ago. Mr. Brady began his business in 1894 with a livery stable in back of his home in Amherst St. Among the passengers his rigs carried from Brick Church Station to their homes were Louis Bamberger (businessman and philanthropist) and Felix Fuld. He bought his first motor cab, a Cadillac in 1912 and his last horse died in 1920. He leaves also his wife Mrs. Mary McCartin Brady two other sons, Thomas J., a retired East Orange patrolman and John E., both of East Orange; two grandchildren and five great - grandchildren. The funeral will be Monday from the rank J. Codey & Sons Funeral Home, 69 High Street, Orange, with a Mass at 9 a.m. in Our Lady Help of Christians Church, East Orange. References
