Information on John Blair

From Clan Ewing:

Don Strong, descendant of Joshua Ewing, son of John Ewing, son of John Ewing of Carnshanagh, has found in his research that the parents of Margaret Blair and John Blair were: John Blair and Esther Vance. Don has Edmonson ancestry and found the following. According to an Edmonson/Edmiston ancestry, John Blair had children John and Margaret. Son John Blair married Sarah _____. (A John Blair can be found in Greenbrier Co., VA, records.) Daughter Margaret Blair, born 1735 in N.J., married Sept 1752 John Cook born 1729 Chester Co., PA; died 1795 in KY. John Cook was the son of William Cook and Jane Ewing, born 1729 in Chester Co., PA, and died in Kentucky. John Cook and Margaret (Blair) Cook went to the Greenbrier River area of Virginia. Their daughter Mary Cook was born there in 1768. She married 25 Dec 1794 in Bourbon Co., KY, William Edmiston, born 17 Feb 1750 in Augusta Co. He died in May 1828. William Edmiston was the 3rd child of Matthew Edmiston, born Donegal County, Ireland in 1715 and died in Virginia about 1790. Matthew Edmiston came to America with his mother Jane Thompson Edmiston in 1720; lived for a while in Pennsylvania before coming to Virginia. Matthew Edmiston married Margaret Patterson in Virginia in 1745. His son David went to Kentucky with John Cook. Note that a John Cook was a CC on the Thomas Butler survey in NNW&S. He is also listed as a neighbor in the Mickle Humble survey in NNW&S, cited earlier.

John Blair was most likely the father of the following Margaret and John Blair, listed as orphans:

Northern Neck Warrants and Surveys, Vol. II, p. 13. Margaret Blair & John Blair, orphans; no warrant, date from survey 18 Jan 1749—2 Mar 1749; 300 acres on Cedar Creek at Little North Mt.[Mountain]; adj. Benjamin Blackburn, Isaac White. CC. William Wilson & Capt. William Vance. Surv. John Baylis. Margaret & John’s guardian was Mr. David Vance. Their parent’s names are not given. (Other land entries, giving the Blairs as neighbors, indicate land on Mulberry Run near the old Presbyterian Meeting House, established in 1736.)
