John Bird's origins have yet to be established. If the age given when he died was correct, then he was born around 1760.

John's first confirmed sighting is on 17th November 1799, when he was married at Barnack in Northamptonshire to Ann Gamble. At the time of their marriage John was living at Newstead Mill, in the neighbouring parish of Uffington in Lincolnshire. He worked as a miller.

John and Ann returned to Uffington after their marriage, having six children there between 1800 and 1808. Ann died giving birth to their sixth child in December 1808, aged about 34.

John survived Ann by just over four years. He died on 20th January 1813 and was buried six days later at Uffington. He was said to be 52 years old. He left a will, which has yet to be researched.
