Research Notes
- cos 1776 Note: per W.W. Hinshaw [1] , Nottingham Monthly Meeting, in Cecil County, Maryland, was "set off" from New Garden Monthly Meeting, Chester County, Pennsylvania in 1730, and held its first monthly meeting on 20th of 4, mo. 1730. This being the nearest monthly meeting to Hopewell, Fairfax, Providence and Cold Spring (Monocacy), their monthly reports were made to Nottingham Monthly Meeting until Hopewell Monthly Meeting was firmly established in 1736. Their records of births, deaths and marriages, therefore, before 1736 should be found in the books of Nottingham Monthly Meeting. In fact, they are so found.

in 1675 John Bales/Beales and his father arrived Salem, NJ on "Griffin" the first ship to America from London or Yorkshire. In 1677 he was living on a farm in Delaware Co., PA. In 1679 had a farm in Chester Co ., PA along Chester Creek in Aston Township across the line from Chester Township. In 1682 he married and in 1704 moved to Notthingham, PA. In 1726 he died in Chester Co., PA. It has been estimated from a list of inhabitants that included John Bales and from a 1691 Court record of a boundary dispute (in which John Bales testified he had ploughed certain land fourteen years ago) that John came to America abt 1677.
From Meeting Records of Chester MM, Chester Co ., PA the following: " At a Monthly Meeting at Chester the 2nd day of ye 8th mo, 1682, John Bales and Mary Clayton did propose their intentions of marriage. At a Monthly Meeting at Chester the 1st day of ye 11th mo., 1682 John Bales and Mary Clayton did propose their intentions of marriage. It being the second time and nothing appeared to obstruct Friends left them to their liberty to proceed."
The home of John and Mary Clayton Beales served as the first meeting place of Quakers in PA. Near neighbors of John Beales and William Clayton, J r., in Chester Co., PA were John Mendenhall, Thomas Hall, William Ashan, N. Pile, Peter Dicks and William Cloud. Most of these were Quakers. Descendants of Mendenhall, Dicks and Clouod families traveled along with the Beales family to VA, NC and TN and there were many intermarriages.
