He was a lawyer and was the first City Clerk of Hudson, NY (1785). "In 1775 he was secretary of the Committee of Safety, which was charged with the necessary preparations and measures for defense, and in furtherance of military operations, and had the entire executive control of the county of Albany...He enlisted as a private in Captain Jeremiah C. Miller's company, which was part of what was known as the First Claverack Battalion."
