John Crenshaw Bates John Crenshaw Bates was born December 24, 1811 in South Carolina. John is the 6th child of 12 of the family of Major General John Bates and Barbary Crenshaw. John C. Bates married Catherine Hardin on December 16, 1930 in Hall County, Georgia. John and Catherine had 13 children by the time the Civil War started. According to family records he join the service for the Confederacy after his sons, Julius Erwin Bates and John G. Bates were killed in action. Family lore says he joined the service at the age of 52, about a week after his son was killed. After he joined as a Private he was then made a Officer. As the lore goes John was wounded really bad in the leg at the Atlanta Campaign. He was discharged because of his disability but as soon as he could sit a horse he rejoined the Confederacy as a Chaplain. His family moved from Arkansas to Texas in 1862. We are still in search of his Unit and Company. It was very hard on the family after losing two sons, then husband goes to war.
