Wife listed as Mary with unknown surname. Catherine (who became Mrs. Mahan) and Thomas (who married Ellander Dyre are two of John and Mary's children (does not specify if there were more children or not).

Database: Compiled Service Records of Soldiers Who Served in the American Army During the Revolutionary War. BUT HOW DO WE KNOW IF THIS IS THE CORRECT MAN OR NOT?

The 6th Regiment was formed in February 1776 at Williamsburg. Companies recruited men from Pittsylvania, Amherst, Buckingham, Charles City, Lunenburg, New Kent, Mecklenburg, Dinwiddie, Prince George, and Spotsylvania Counties. Field officers at Valley Forge were Colonel John Gibson, Lt. Colonel Charles Simms and Major Samuel Hopkins

FamilySearch.org family tree indicates he is John Paul Ball, Jr. son of John Paul Ball, Sr. and Patience Ann Reeves of Essex County, Virginia. THERE ARE NO SOURCES, HOWEVER, so I am not reproducing that hypothesis here. It might prove useful to try searching more in Lunenburg and Essex County, Virginia.

1790, 1800, 1810, 1820 census Pittsylvania County, and Lunenburg County, Virginia - no John Ball. The closest I found was John Bull and John Bell in Accomack County, Virginia. Pittsylvania was established as a county in 1767, so that does not explain the absence of this man and his family from the census.
