After his graduation from the University of Chicago in 1938, John worked as a paint salesman for Martin Senor where he was very successful, especially during the war years. Because he had two children, he was able to avoid the draft. He and his wife, Donna, had a dream of being in business for themselves and saved all the money they could. At the end of World War II, they had accumulated enough capital try it. Therefore, with a partner, Al Miller, they founded Portable Electric Tools, Inc. in 1946 and were able to capitalize on the pent-up demand for inexpensive hand tools needed by do-it-yourselfers. The company was extremely successful. After Al Miller died, John bought out his interest and the company continued to grow. However, the pressures of business caused a serious erosion of his health and Portable was sold to Murphy Industries in about 1975. He and the family then moved to Naples , Florid

After his death, he was cremated His ashes are buried in a small plot of grass with his name and the location of the plot on a bronze plaque on the wall of the church, Trinity by the Cove, Naples, Florida.
