OBITUARY: "Evansville Journal - News," Thursday evening, August 10, 1911, Page 1 Column 2, 3. "STOPS TO REST UNDER A TREE; DIES ON SPOT" "Five minutes after John Austin, 68 years old, stepped from his wagon to rest in the shade of a tree at Louisiana and Stringtown road at 8 o'clock Thursday morning he fell dead. 'I've got to rest,' were the last words of the old farmer to his companion, Louis McMurtry, who drove Mr. Austin's team down from his farm near Lynnville, Indiana to Evansville Wednesday. He complained to Mr. McMurtry of feelling tired, and when he saw the shade trees at the corner he stopped the horses for the old man to rest. Five minutes after he got under the trees Mr. Austin expired. He did not complain of feeling sick to his companion or to his daughters, Misses Ada, Eva and Rilla Austin, 408 Fourth Avenue, where he stayed Wednesday. He told McMurtry, however, when he started out for his homeward trip in his wagon that he felt tired. Mr. Austin died as though dropping into a deep sleep, according to McMurtry, who could not realize that the man was dead. Death was caused by the heat, according to Coroner Macer. 'The heat yesterday and the long trip probably over taxed Mr. Austin's strength,' said Coroner Macer Thursday. Mr. Austin was a well known farmer of Warrick County and resided near Lynnville, Indiana. He leaves three daughters in Evansville, who reside at 408 Fourth Avenue. The body will be shipped to this home for burial Friday morning.
