John went with his sister, Esther, when she and her husband, Alonzo Pearce emigrated to Utah with the Mormon pioneers. There is no evidence that he joined the Church.

John, by 1850, had moved from Utah and settled in Missouri working as a railman/farmer. It is rumoured that he married and had a son John who rode with Jesse James and the Younger brothers, but as I said this is a rumour and has not been confirmed.
