Note: BIOGRAPHY: This story was told to me by my uncle, Ventis Walter Thomas.

BIOGRAPHY: Lydia's husband, J.K. Anderson and her brother, Sterling Angel were good buddies. These two fellas found a moonshine still that belonged to a man named Mose Walker. On Aug 6, 1921 in Rock Creek there was an election being held. Ventis said that everyone in the county went to the election (held in the school yard) and more or less spent the day talking to old friends/neighbors they hadn't seen in a while. The election was used as a means of "catching up" on things in the community. J.K Anderson and Sterling Angel ran into Mose Walker at the election and began publicly confronting/speaking to Mose about his still. Mose Walker, who had been drinking, took exception to what they were saying, became enraged and pulled a pistol on the two men and killed them. Sterling's father, Nimrod Angel, went to Ancil (known as Poppy) Thomas' house (my grandfather) and asked him if he would bring his wagon into town to pick up the bodies of Sterling and J.K. and told Poppy what had happened. Poppy was one of the few in the area who even HAD a wagon so he took the wagon to Rock Creek and picked up the bodies of Sterling and J.K. Ventis states Poppy brought their bodies by the house for his mom to see them before taking them to Nimrod's house to prepare them for burial. Nimrod Angel was my grandmother's uncle, making Sterling Anderson her first cousin and J.K. her cousin by marriage. Ventis states that Nim and Poppy had both the bodies in the back of the wagon on their backs with a white sheet pulled over them. Ventis states that Poppy pulled back the sheet for his mother to see them and Ventis said he saw them himself as well. Sterling had a hole in his chest where his heart would be and J.K. had a bullet hole in the middle of his forehead. Ventis stated that J.K. had at least two boys, because Ventis used to play with them when he was little. He didn't know if Sterling had any children at the time. Both men are buried in the Angel Cemetery off of Angel Valley Road in Scott County, TN. Mose Walker was convicted of murdering the two men and was sentenced to 20 yrs in prison. Ventis states he can remember his parents talking about Mose being released from prison in the late 30's.
