Facts and Events
John inherited the family village of Alsop-En-Le-Dale, co. Derbyshire, after Thomas. It is unclear here whether Thomas was his brother or his father. Here during the middle 1500's Thomas Becon, chaplain to Archbishop Cranmer and Protector Somerset, came seeking obscurity. Thomas had been a clergyman at Canterbury Cathedral until his preaching earned him residence in the Tower of London, Freed, he traveled in remote area of England, eventually spending a year in the mansion of John Alsop. He writes of his welcome there: "Coming into a little village called Alsop-en-le-Dale I chanced upon a certain gentleman named Alsop, lord of the village, a man not only ancient in years but also ripe in the knowledge of Christ's doctrine. After we had saluted one another, and taken a sufficient repast, he showed me certain books which he called his jewels. I found there very good wits and apt unto learning. John died shortly after Thomas Becon left the village of Alsop." 1 2 |
