Facts and Events
John Walker Alloway was born John Walker Alloway Strange, as the family surname was "Alloway Strange." His baptismal record gives his name as John Walker Strange. As an adult, John stopped using the second half of his surname, and became known as John Alloway. His middle name, Walker, is probably taken from his maternal grandmother's maiden name, Walker. John's maternal grandparents were John Moore and Judith Walker. John's paternal grandparents were John Alloway Strange Sr. and Ann Mitchell. John's father, Abraham Alloway Strange, sometimes used the name Abraham Alloway, sometimes Abraham Strange, Abraham A. Strange, or A. A. Strange. After her marriage to Abraham, John's mother, Mary, became known as Mary A. Strange, with the initial "A" standing for the first part of the family surname. Mary's nickname was "Molly," which is how she was named in Abraham's will. Note: Abraham's name is sometimes seen in records as "Abram" which is a standard abbreviation for Abraham. John Walker had an uncle, Archelaus Alloway Strange (1754 - 1808), the brother of Abraham Alloway Strange. By the time Archelaus moved to Boone County, Kentucky, in about 1794, Archelaus had also dropped his second surname, and he was known as Archelaus Alloway. Archelaus and his first wife, Elizabeth Vannerson, had a son, John Alloway (1786 - 1846), who is sometimes confused with John Walker Alloway. References
