Obituary

From "The Bloomington News Letter", Saturday, July 15, 1854:
Obituary
Died, on the night of the 2nd instant, John Alexander, Sr., at the residence of his son, Matthew M. Alexander, Bloomington, Ind., where for some years past he has had his home.
The deceased had attained an age to which very few are permitted to arrive, having passed four score years and ten. He was a native of Augusta County, Virginia, but immigrated to Tennessee when that State was a Territory. When called to bear arms in defense of his country, he acted the man and the solider with heroism. When called to any office of duty or trust he filled it with fidelity. In all the course of his long life, in whatever circumstances he was placed, he manifested a fixed and settled purpose of doing what he conceived to be right, regardless of the views, opinions, or whims of others. He was always an ardent friend of Freedom, and an active, zealous opponent of Slavery in whatever form, or under whatever specious guise presented, a prominent member of the first emancipation society of Tennessee, and a prime mover of the first temperance association, organized in the eastern part of that State.
As a private individual, a soldier, an officer or a citizen, he ever advocated and practiced temperance principles, and to his strict adherence to the laws of health is his longevity perhaps mainly attributable. He had a mind for investigation. He read much and thought much - especially did he make the Bible, and those works on theology, of sterling worth, his chief companions. He was a regular, orderly member of the Presbyterian and Reformed Presbyterian Church for the last sixty years or more, in full fellowship and good standing.
In religion, in politics, in business transactions, and in all the various associations of life, he was every found to be a man of integrity and moral honesty. Those who had to do with him, knew where to look for him and on what to depend.
He is now gone from among us; but his memory shall not perish. He is taken to his home above, that home of which he often spoke in terms of ardent expectation and desire. 'He rests from his labors and his works follow him.'
