John was the son of John and Katherine Akeman of Bath Co, VA. He married Mary Polly Milhollin on April 6, 1819 in Bath Co, VA. From this union were born three known children: Eliza Jane Barnett, Katherine Ann O'Rear and Nancy J. Ryan.
