As told by Golza Adkins in the Adkins Pamphlet of 1955, John was killed by a group of horse thieves sometime during th e Civil War at the mouth of the Fez Creek. He along with brother Goldsberry and son Andrew were attacked after dark with John being instantly killed and Goldsberry carrying a bullet in his neck the rest of his life. Andrew escaped by hiding in the bushes until the horse thieves were gone.
