Peter Nothstein began his military service at 17 years of age. He served with General Sullivan in the battle of Long Island. With his musket strapped to his back he swam across the Long Island sound to resist British capture under General Clinton.
Peter reportedly fought at the Battle of Brandywine under George Washington.
After the Revolution he settled in Mahoning Township on a plot of land known as Pennsburg, on a corner of the property at Center Square now Normal Square. (In 1830 a school of higher education, Normal Institue, was built near the square. In essence, a high school that required students to pay tuition. With the new shcool the village received a new name)
