After the death of their farther, Gerrit in 1700, Johannes (aged 6 at the time) and Suzanne (aged 10 at the time) stayed with their grandparents Pierre and Suzanne Jacob (nee de Vos). After the death of their grandfarther Pierre his widow Suzanne married a French refugee, Nicolaas de la Noy. The two children inherited in the place of their mother from their grandmother Suzanne when she passed away in 1708.

Johannes participated in a trade expedition at the end of 1739 at age 45 to what is today known as the Transkei, Eastern Cape, South Africa. The expedition party consisted of Hermanus Hubner who was the organiser, Hendrik de Vries, Coenraad Scheffer, Johannes and Daniel de Vries, Jan Bruyns, Christoffel van Hoogreefde, Louis Cloete and Johannes and his oldest son Gerrit. During this expedition Johannes narrowly escape death at hands of Xhosa warriors but unfortunately his son was brutally murdered by the Xhosa Chief Palo together with five other expedition members (see death notes under person 14, Gerrit Jansen van Vuren below for the full story).

  6. The baptism register of the French Congregation for this period was lost and it is therefore not known on what date Joahnnes was baptised
  7. C Huisner recorded the deaths in the Swellendam District at the time. In 1759 a list of all deaths was bounded in with the official death register of Tulbagh. Just the names and not the date of death appears in the said register. It refers to the deaths of no. 21 Jan van Vooren and his wife Catharina, no. 47 Gerrit van Vooren, no. 48 Daniel van Vooren and no. 49 Susanna van Vooren on the farm of Jan Loots, Kafferskuilsrivier. They therefore died before 1759
