    DE PEYSTER, Johannes The founder of the De Peyster family. For the city's defences he was taxed 50 fl. in 1654. He loaned no money to the city in 1664 for repairing defences, but he was worth 15,000 fl. in 1674. Under the Dutch, De Peyster served as Burgomaster and Schepen, and when the city fell to the English, he officiated as Alderman and Deputy Mayor.
