Introduction

The Thurn family materials were donated to the Rutherford B Hayes Presiden tial Center by Dr. Richard Thurn in 2003. Biographical Sketch

Born in 1808 in Eusserthal, (Bavaria) Ger, Johann Jacob Von Thurn/Thu rn was the eldest of the six children of Johann Friedrich Adam Von Thurn/T hurn (1784-1849) and Maria Catherina Hopfinger (1786-1863). At the a ge of 24, Johan Jacob immigrated to the United States with his father. Th ey settled in Sandusky OH, and later moved to Bay Twp Ottawa CO OH. Jac ob married Elisabeth Shef in Cleveland OH, in 1838. Ten years later, t he couple divorced. The couple’s two children remained with their mothe r. Jacob then married Maria Catherine Waggoner who had emigrated from Alsa ce-Lorraine in 1844. They settled in Rice Twp Sandusky CO OH, where they r aised ten children. Jacob continued to farm in Bay Twp until March 1864 wh en he purchased 80 acres in Scott Twp Sandusky CO OH. He resided on this f arm until his death in 1874. He is buried in the Metzgar Cemetery in Sco tt Twp. Maria Catherine married James Wm Barnes two years later. She di ed in 1896 and was buried beside Jacob in the Metzgar Cemetery.

Scope and Content

The collection consists of original documents of the Von Thurn/Thurn/Thu rn family, dating from 1784 to 1923. The bulk of the material is vital rec ords documents abstracted from German church and civil records. Only the l and grant of Wm McFarland, the valedictory address of Russell Eugene Thur n, and the confirmation certificate of Gustavus Adolphus Thurn are writt en in the English language. However, Thurn family descendants have includ ed descriptive explanations of each document.
