Johann Christian's father passed away Feb. 20, 1730. His grandfather followed Dec. 29, 1732. He himself is known as Christian. He first appears in Bremen Apr. 14, 1751, when he took the Bremer citizen's oath. Three months later he married Adelheit Sanders. His profession at that time was given as "Grobbecker". The couple had 3 sons, of whom little is known. In fact, it is very likely that the firstborn son died at an early age, as his name was reused for the firstborn son of Christian's second marriage. His first wife must have passed away in 1761 or 1762. He remarried Adelheid Stille Oct. 27, 1762, with whom he had 3 daughters and 2 sons. Christian and his 2nd wife both were mentioned in the record of the first marriage of their son Joachim Engelke, July 22, 1804. But only his name is mentioned on the occasion of the second marriage of said son, on May 31, 1807. As of 1818, his youngest son, Hermann Diederich, continued the bakery under his name. Christian may have passed away shortly before that.

In this record of "Die Maus" the year of birth erroneously is given as 1742. In another record the date of birth is noted as "1724?" (which matches the actual date of Dec. 23, 1723).
