Facts and Events
In 1797, a the age of 24 years, Joachim Engelke started up a bakery separate from his father's. He got married in 1804, but soon lost his wife 3 days after the birth of their second child. He remarried 3 months later and had 4 more children. He and his family lived in the Pelzerstrasse nr.51. His bakery was also housed in the Pelzerstrasse, at nr. 31. In the address books of Bremen, commencing in 1794, no record is found of the von Holtz family members until 1805, when Joachim Engelke starts to appear as a “Weisbecker” (a higher class of baker than “Grobbecker”, the profession of his father). Initially he is recorded as “Holz, Ioachim, Weisbecker, Pelzerstraße.”, and later as “von Holz, Joachim Engelke, Weißbecker, Pelzerstraße, Nr. 51.” As of 1818 Johann Christian’s youngest son, Herman Diederich, appears in the address books too, as a Grobbecker. As of 1825 the entry for the 2 brothers changes to “von Holtz”. No mention is made in these books of any of the sons of Johann Christian’s first marriage, which seems to imply that Joachim's older half-brothers all passed away early (or moved away, or were without noteworthy profession). Joachim's bakery was continued by his oldest son, and later initially by a grandson. The latter sold the bakery to "Bäckermeister Adolf Garde" in 1903. It later became part of "Backstube Siebrecht GmbH & Co. oHG" and remained in operation until 2016, albeit in a different location in Bremen. Image Gallery
