Joseph Etris, Jr. REFN: 165 FROM: History of Berks County, PA VOL II, Page 1249 - Johann Heinrich Seidel 1732-1801: was the first Seidel to come to America. Originally a native of Strasbourg, Germany, he crossed the ocean on the ship "Brothers", and landed at Philadelphia, September 10, 1751. As was the custom of the times, he was sold for his passage because he was too poor to pay his own way. The following year he obtained his freedom and immediately proceeded to Reading, Berks County, where, in time, he became a large land owner, possessing property in Bern and a tract of four hundred acres in Maiden Creek Township. Farming was his chief occupation and it brought him large returns, but during a period beginning with 1786, Mr. Seidel returned to Germany and entered upon mercantile ventures there. He was, however, mainly identified with Maiden Creek Township where he operated his farm for many years. In his earlier life, he saw considerable military service. He participated in the Indian Wars under Captain Hiester, and later in the Revolutionary War, while his wife and children carried on the farming. In 1760, Johann Heinrich Seidel married Anna Catherine Rodmacher, who was born January 19, 1738. She died February 9, 1808 at seventy years and twenty days of age. Her husband died some years earlier, August 21, 1801, at age sixty-nine years, four months and twenty-one days. His last resting place is the grave yard of Zion's Church in Perry Township, Berks County. The spot marked by a heavy marble slab. Johann and Anna Seidel had six sons and three daughters. Of the three daughters only two are recorded by name, Mary and Margaret...it is supposed the third daughter died in infancy. Johann Heinrich Seidel is on the D.A.R. Patriot List 1966 Book 929.4 at the New Castle Library, Page 603.
