Research notes
- In a message from Henry Fischer, it was learned that Johannes Mertz (Marz) was one of the first settlers in Tofu - they arrived there in 1722-23. Their place of origin was Pinstott or better known by its German name, Bönstadt (Noble Domain of Erzenburg), which is 12.5 miles from Frankfurt-am-Main.
- There were other Mertz men listed in the Tofu history - Hartmann Mertz and Adam Mertz - most likely brothers or cousins.
- Tofu was the first of the settlements established on the Eszterhazy domains by Germans.
