NASSAU was a former independent German speaking state, just north of the Palatinate, and east of the Rhine River. It was once a duchy. It was annexed by the Kingdom of Prussia, and incorporated into the Province of Hesse-Nassau.

In 2012 it is part of the province of Hesse, one of 16 states in the Federal Republic.
