Espenschied--LeFevre Interpolation

This interpolation is made because it represents an intermarrying family with the Howry family. The ninth child of Daniel Espenschied, known as Samuel Esbenshade married Elizabeth Howry (father- John Fr., grandfather -Johannes, great grandfather- Hans).

Daniel Espenschied was born 8-11-1765 at Siefersheim in the present province of Rheinhessen, Germany. He emigrated from there, according to tradition with his two brothers, Valentine and Peter. No ship record has been found of the arrival of the latter two.

The written record of his arrival is found in "Strassburger and Hinke", published in 1934, Volume 3, page 28, where he is listed as Daniel Spenscheld; arrived at the port of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania from Rotterdam, 10-14-1787; Serverus Dalsted, Master, Ship Dorothea.

He was a tanner by trade and followed this trade for more than sixty years. He first settled in Leacock Township, not far from New Holland in East Earl Township, Lancaster County, Pennsylvania. Little is known about his early life after coming to the U.S.

He died 9-24-1856 at his home about one mile southwest of Paradise, Pennsylvania; was married 11-13-1792 at the first Reformed Church, Lancaster, Pennsylvania to Elizabeth LeFevre (Father- Adam, Grandfather -Philip, Great Grandfather -Isaac). born. 9-28-1770 in Paradise Township, Lancaster County, Pennsylvania, died 9-14-1857 at her home in Paradise Township. Both are buried in the Strasburg Mennonite Cemetery in Strasburg, Pennsylvania. They were highly respected members of the Mennonite Church and known as thrifty, industrious citizens.

He petitioned for and was naturalized as an American citizen, 8-1-1802. Joseph LeFevre attests to his good character to the honorable John Joseph Henry, Judge of the Second Judicial District of Pennsylvania

About 1815 he moved his family from Leacock Township to Paradise Township Lancaster County, Pennsylvania and took up considerable acreage, extending from the village to about one mile southwesterly where the buildings were located.

Here he followed the dual occupation of farmer and tanner. The location of the tannery has already been described near the end of the Fierre- LeFevre Interpolation, this Section and Chapter. At the time he operated this small tannery it contained twenty vats, the only machinery was a one horse bark mill.

His wife, Elizabeth Le Fevre as indicated by her formula is a descendant of Isaac LeFevre and Catherine Fiere, daughter of Madam Marie Fierre who came to the Pequea Valley in 1712. Thus, all the descendants of Daniel Espenschied are also descendants of these early pioneers. Consult Fierre Le Fevre Interpolation in this Section and Chapter.

Daniel Espenschied spelled his name most frequently Esbenshade and Espenshade according to the Lancaster County records. In the identity list of their children below, the name Esbenshade has been used for the second generation. Some of those buried in the Carpenter's Cemetery have the name spelled Espenshade on their tombstones. Since he moved his family from Leacock Township to Paradise Township about 1815, his children were all born in Leacock Township, Lancaster County, Pennsylvania.
