E-mail from Joan Wilcox Carey (careymj@@charter.net) on 3/29/2006:

Dear Jim,

I recently found your information on the Veregge family of Schledehausen, Germany and Richmond, IN on Family Tree Maker's Genealogy Site.

I am descended from Balthasar Heinricus Veregge through his eldest daughter by Anna Wilken, Catharina Engle Veregge, b. 24 April 1782. Catharina Engle married Johann Adam ERK between 1809 and 1814. Their eldest daughter, Maria Anna Engel ERK was born 28 February 1809 in Astrup, Germany (Schledehausen church records). She married Johann Heinrich Leberecht DRIFMEIER on 17 October 1833 in Schledehausen.

The Drifmeiers had 7 children: 2 died in childhood and the other 5 emigrated with their parents arriving in New York aboard the ship "Emma" on 25 October 1847. The family went first to Cincinnati where they appeared in the 1850 census as well as the Cincinnati City Directories in 1850-51 and 1851-52. In the 1849-50 City Directory, a Frederick Veregge was listed at the same location. I imagine this was the Johann Frederich Veregge b. 16 May 1822 and died 1890 in Richmond. He would have been my Maria Anna Engel Erk's first cousin.

The Drifmeier's went to Richmond in about 1851 where the children all married. All the Drifmeier children, as well as Johann Heinrich Leberecht and Maria Engel are buried in Lutherania Cemetery in Richmond. I knew there were Veregges in Richmond, but I had never been able to figure out how they were related to my line. I was so thrilled to find you information that was so well documented.

I have access to the Schledehausen records from 1822-1847 on LDS microfilm, but I have not seen the earlier records. I saw on a message board that you had traveled to Germany. Did you do research at the Archive, or were you able to actually see the church books? Were you able to visit Schledehausen and Astrup? We had planned a trip there in October 2001, but backed out after 9/11. We still hope to make it one day.

I would be happy to provide more information on the descendants of Catharina Engel if you are interested, including my line of descent. Are you descended from Herman Heinrick Johann (1785-1867)? Have you ever lived in Richmond? I was born there, and my parents and grandparents are buried there.

Thank you so much for you fine work. I look forward to hearing from you.

Joan Wilcox Carey

Follow-up e-mail on 3/30:

Dear Jim,

It was good hearing from you. I really envy you having been to Schledehausen. Hopefully I'll get there one of these days. I have attached a group sheet for Johann Adam Erk and Anna Catharine Engel Veregge. You will note that four of their children who lived to adulthood immigrated to the U.S. and are all buried in Lutherania Cemetery in Richmond. Two of the sons, Christoph and Friederick immigrated with the Drifmeiers.

Let me know if you have any questions.

Thanks again for sharing your good research.

Joan
