Born May 1758 in Mezöberény. His parents were Hartmann and Margaretha (maiden name unknown) and his godfathers were Johann Adam Mónes, Andreas Raus. Just before he was born, the Articles of Confederation were drafted in America.

In his lifetime, here in America there was the Northwest Ordinance in 1790. Also in that period of time the Constitutional Convention met, Turkey declared war on Russia, the United States of America were established, George Washington was elected the first president of the United States and the French Revolution took place.

He and his wfie, Catharina Elisabetha Braun, were married the year of our country's independence on 26 November 1776 in Mezöberény which is in Bekes County in Hungary. He was 18 and his wife was. They had 22 children! Either he loved his wife enormously or he wanted to have a large family! Five daughters were either stillborn or died in infancy. One of those little stillborns arrived two years before Johann Hartmann and Catharina Elisabetha were married--when they were 15 years old! Three daughters we don't have anything beyond their births. One daughter died at the age of 11. One son died at six, another at one, another in infancy, and another at 11. One son we have a record of his birth and death at the age of 63 in Mezöoberény. We know four sons lived and married, one of which was Andreas, our direct ancestor. Two daughters lived and were married according to the records. Another daughter was born in Mezöberény and died in Semlak at the age of 63. The first child was born in 1774 and the last in 1805 when the parents were both 47 and 46 respectively. Thirty-one years of birthing babies!

In the 1775/76 Census, Johann Hartmann is listed as a Coloni (farmer) and has 5 cows, 1 sterile cow, 1 3-year-old bull, 1 two-year-old bull, 5 horses, 2 swine, 1 unit of home land, 11 units of fileds, 12 units of meadows, and 12 units of vineyards. He was listed as having taxes to pay. He is #244.

In the 1779/80 Census, Johann Hartmann is listed as Hartmann and is a Coloni. He has one son who has reached the age of 16--there are other children but they have not reached 16. He is also listed as having a male servant. He has 3 cows, 2 sterile cows, 1 three-year-old bull, 4 Vituli ?, 7 horses, 1 two-year-old donkey, 2 swine, 8 sheep, 1 unit of home land, 11 units of fields, 12 units of meadows, 12 units of vineyards and is on the tax rolls. He is #344.

In the 1796 - 1797 census, he is listed as Hartmann, is a coloni (farmer) and has one son the age of 16. He has 1 cow, 6 sterile cows, 3 three-year-old bulls, 1 unit of land for the house, 6 units of field acreage, 54 units of meadows, and 1.5 units of vineyards. He is on the tax rolls and is number 58.

In the 1787 census, Johann Hartmann is listed as 27 years old, his wife, Catharina, is 26. They have three children: Martin 9, Andreas 5, and Catharina 1. The age doesn't conincide with other records but one must expect this when researching old documents.

In 1833 on 16 December, Johann Hartmann died in Mezöberény at the age of 75 -- a good age for that period of time.
