"In the latter part of the eighteenth century there came into what is now Hubley Twp, then known as Pinegrove Twp, (Berks Twp.) a pioneer settler who made a permanent settlement on a 600 acre trace of land extending from Pine Creek to Deep Creek and from Rausch Gap westward almost as far the Lutheran and Reformed Cemetery at Sacramento. The deed for this land is dated May 17, 1790. This pioneer settler was Jacob Artz, who came from the Blue Mountains in Berks County. Most of the Artz's in Hegins Twp can trace their ancestry to this pioneer family. He had two sons, Philip and John - Philip receiving the upper part of this tract of six hundred acres, and John receiving the lower part, practically all that land was wilderness. Majestic pine trees spread their branches toward the heavens, a shelter for the birds and a haven for the beasts. The whole valley was known as "Das Schoenen Pine Tal," or the beautiful pine valley. The name of the township was a natural heritage, Pinegrove Township. In order to carry on farming as they had been beyond the Blue Mountains, land had to be cleared. many trees were cut to make log huts, while the extra timber was burned ruthlessly. The elder son, Philip, who was married to Barbara Kuntzelman had a large family. The younger son, John, the name of whose wife is not known to us, had a son named Michael, who married Elizabeth Huntzinger, their family follows: The Michael Artz family: Elizabeth m. John R. Updegrave Matilda m Jacob Klock Michael m Elizabeth Herb Edward B. m Maria Bixler Lydia m Frederick Woohley Sarah m Lewis A. Scheiber Israel m Lucetta Shuyer References
