This man's name, as well as his ancestors, are derived from assumptions made. The basis for their inclusion is the DNA testing results. Most likely is that Jacob was either Johan Philip's son or grandson.

A search on Rootsweb turned up interesting results. A Johann Phillipp Hamann, Sr., with the same wife, Margaretha, seems to have drifted from Baden to Pennsylvania to Kentucky and Alabama with a second wife and a bunch of children. Digging into it further, I found shawnda75@@earthlink.net. She has a very detailed writeup on the Philip Hammond, as she says his name came to be, who was in Alabama. The writeup says Philip and a brother, Peter, left Germany together.

Shawnda has his birthdate as 1738 in Kuernbach, Bretten, Baden, Germany. This is a few years earlier than Johan Philip Haman, who everyone agrees was born in 1744. Were these two men cousins? Or is it the same man?

Conrad Herman (1725-1798) Namesakes:

Conrad Herman came to America at the age of 29, soon thereafter settled in the area of Lehigh Township of Northampton County, PA. In his will he mentions his wife Maria Augustina and four sons, one of which is his namesake. Before 1830 there were at least two Conrad Herman's in Wayne County, Ohio. Were either/both of these men relatives or namesakes of the elder Conrad?

One of these Wayne County Conrad Herman's married Maria Magdalena "Mattie" Keister, whose sister Elizabeth Keister married George Herman, highly probable grandson of Conrad & Maria Augustina, through their eldest son, Johann George Herman. Also these Keister girls'grandfather was the elder Conrad Herman's neighbor. So wouldn't it seem highly probable also that this Conrad H. would be a grandson? How many Conrad Herman's could there be?

Would you believe more than a dozen? Or at least tidbits of information exist about so many Conrad's that there are more than a dozen segments. Certainly some of these segments belong 'Merged together', but can this be done with a degree of reliability and accuracy?

Let's look at these bits of info:

Conrad Herman's :

1.) Conrad b. 1725 d. 1798 (The Elder)

Generation two ---------------

( One of the following is the Conrad mentioned in #1's Will.)Must Match with #6, below.

2.) Conrad b. abt. 1762 m. Margaretha Koeth (Keth)

3.) Conrad b. bet. 1740-60 m. Catherine Heiser (Lehigh Co.)

4.) Conrad b. 1747 Germany d. 9 Jun 1822 Ohio. Wife named Christena.

5.) Conrad b. abt 1773 m. Christina ??

6.) Conrad b. bet. 1756-1767 Son of Conrad #1. listed in 1800 Census Northampton Co.

16.) Conrad Herman, Shoemaker, father of the Jacob b. Dec 31,1791 in Westmoreland County, PA. These Herman's were in Wayne County, Ohio by the 1820's, living in Franklin township. This Conrad might belong in generation two or three. Who has this Conrad's b'date and d'date? -tjm.

Is this possibly #4 above? Was Jacob Herman's mother named Christena?

Generation Three --------------

(Some of these individuals, such as #7, were named for #1, Grandfather Conrad Herman.)

7.) Conrad b. abt. 1796 son of Lorentz (He the youngest son of #1) (Northampton Co.)

8.) Conrad b. 25 aug 1783 Berks Co. Richmond Twp.

9.) Conrad b. bef. 1793 5 named children, including C.F. Herman (Northampton Co.)

10.) Conrad b. abt. 1796 m. Lydia ?? (Northampton Co.)

11.) Conrad C. b. abt. 1796 m. Eve Moyer & Susannah Mack (Northampton Co.)

12.) Conrad b. May 8, 1791 m. Maria Magdalena (Mattie) Keister

13.) Conrad (1794-1870) buried at St. Pauls Cem. Indianland, (Northampton Co.) with wife Elizabeth Herman (1793-1846).

14.) Conrad b. 11 May 1803 son of #5.

17.) Conrad Herman m. Elizabeth Muffly (1795-1842) They married in Oct. 1820 in Cherryville, Northampton Co., PA. and they had NO children. Added Aug. 5, 2001 -tjm.

Generation Four ---------------

15.) C.F. Herman Is the C short for Conrad?

Analysis of Above:

  1. 1......... This is the Elder Conrad, American Immigrant & Patriarch. Father of J. George, Conrad, Jacob, and Lorentz.
  2. 2......... Highly possible as being the Namesake of #1.
  3. 3......... Possible to being the Namesake of #1.
  4. 4......... Highly possible to being the Namesake of #1. Source: DAR Patriot Index.
  5. 5 ........ If this Approximate birthdate is way-off, then this is probably number 4. This 'could' be marr. date instead of b'date.
  6. 6......... If number 6 is totally accurate then who qualifies? Numbers 2, 3, and 6.
  7. 7......... Definite Grandson of Conrad.
  8. 8......... possibly the son of Conrad's eldest son Johann George Herman. JGH lived in Berks Co. during this time.
  9. 9......... Likely to be a grandson.
  10. 10........ Likely to be a grandson.
  11. 11........ Likely to be a grandson. The middle initial 'C." might be an error (from Census).
  12. 12........ Likely to be a grandson.
  13. 13........ This is likely to be a grandson. Wife is likely to be Elizabeth Missils.
  14. 14........ Son of #5.
  15. 15........ Likely to be a great-grandson. He is the Son of #9.
  16. 16........ Could be in Generation Two or remote possibility Three.

a.) Facts #2 and #3 are not the same Conrad, so Fact #6 would be merged with one or the other. But which?? b.) Numbers 4 & 5 might be the same person 'if' the bdate of #5 is actually the marr.date. We've probably all seen this happen. Could also be #16. c.) If #7 is definite and #8 is believed to be true, then there 'should' only be a max of two more grandsons named Conrad in this family, Conrad's son & Jacob's son. Choices: 9, 10, 11, 12, 13, 14, 16. d.) #15 only possible as ggson, son of #9. e.) It was purportedly written after the 100 year reunion (1938) of the Franklin township Jacob Herman Families that possibly in attendance were some of the descendants of George Herman. If True, then some relationship exists? Where is the proof? Need this Conrad's b'date or Age at Deat

Caution: When performing internet searches several individuals named 'Herman Conrad' popped up! Conrad=Surname.

When we solve this to our satisfaction, we can tackle the Jacob Herman's.

Wouldn't it be grand to get those Howmans back to Pennsylvania? Alas--the researchers from whom I have much of my information, Jim and Irma Markel in Portland, Oregon, have been trying to locate them in Pennsylvania for about 30 years, with no success. I'm a newcomer--only been researching for about 5 years--I still try but I'm afraid the task is dauntin

Many of the folks in Wayne County who were Howman neighbors were from Westmoreland County, and I've always thought that a really intensive search might start there. I'm not sure what Jim and Irma have done "on the ground" in Pennsylvania. I haven't done anything. By happy accident, my brother has recently moved from California to Harrisburg, Pennsylvania (Dauphin County) and I'm hoping that I can plan a research trip to see them and look into my Brubaker ancestors (2nd great grandmother Nancy Howman was married to 2nd great grandfather James Brubaker). These Brubakers are known to have come from Dauphin County, but I have no reason to think the Howmans were from there.

Your great x ? grandmother Sarah Howman was a 1st cousin to my 3rd great grandfather William Howman (he was Nancy's father). He was the 5th child and 1st son of Frederick and Elizabeth (MNU to me) Howman. Frederick and Elizabeth's oldest child was daughter Hannah Howman, who married Solomon Markel. Jim Markel, the indefatigable researcher I referred to above, is a descendant of theirs.

This file is the one that I got from Jim and Irma. It doesn't have anything on the Keelers other than their marriage, but I thought you might find it interesting anyway.

Regards, Nancy

I research PHILIP ANDREW HARMAN and see Conrad frquently. Conrad is a different line. Hope this helps in your research. posted by Georgia Hileman Halloran

I stumbled across your Wayne County Howman family info on the net, and was very struck by the absolutely similar christian names to Howmans I had found, whilst looking for my own ancestors here in England.

My personal research is very limited at this point, I have just started really, and time is always limited of course, but in case you did not know, there seems to be three 'old' concentrations of Howman in UK, i.e. Norfolk Country, Gloucestershire County (in and around the Cotswold Hills) and in the north of England, in Manchester.

My own family appear to have come from Chipping Camden, an ancient place in the Cotswolds - this is where I found the matching Christian names to those on your page (including Frederick, Elizabeth, Hanna, Catherine and Henry). Too much of a coincidence for me! Unfortunately my own notes are not with me at the moment so I cannot provide fuller details, I will when I can. There are gravestones in Stow on the Wold with the Howmans called Harry, Frederick and Elizabeth.

There were also Howmans (well, still are) in South Africa, Zimbabwe (formerly Rhodesia), Australia and New Zealand, old colonial territories of the UK, and the destination for criminals who were deported! I discovered from an old Howman that there is a book called 'The Howman Heritage' and another called 'The History of the Howman Family'. The Howman line is traceable (according to this contact I made) right back to the 1200's. You may well already have found a reference to a famous Priest from ancient times called John of Fakenham - he was a Howman.

Many Howmans seem to have followed the Legal Profession - there are some Lawyers today in Stow on the Wold in the Cotswolds, and in Australia and New Zealand too. Others have been nomadic practical people, following work into the industrialised areas in England in mid and late Victorian times. Emigration records for this time do make reference to some Howmans emigrating to the Colonies, hence the African and Australisian presence. Being tall with big hands and a practical enterprising nature seem to be common Howman characteristics. My great Grandfather, James Edwin Howman was a Plasterer and Slater, and employed many men in Reading, Berkshire - his skills were passed down to my Grandfather, William Charles and in part to my own Father, Robert.

I would be interested to hear any news about 'old time' Howman folks - if it is of interest I will send what I know about my ancestors when I am reunited with my own meagre information shortly. I have a modern publication which lists about 1200 Howman addresses worldwide.

Hope all is well with you in the USA. Best regards, Richard Edward Howman Dorset, England
