The following information is obtained from the various documents in the file: Joel Terrell served as a private in the United States Army in the revolutionary war, the names of the officers, dates of service and other details were not stated in any of the documents in the file except that he was wounded in the battle at Guilford in North Carolina [Battle of Guilford Court House, March 15, 1781]. He was awarded a pension of $3.33 per month effective December 15, 1813 which was increased to $5.33 per month under the act of April 24, 1816. At the time he received the initial pension disbursements he lived in Wake County, North Carolina. He died in Rutherford County North Carolina on December 26, 1819. His age does not appear in the file. He was survived by a widow, Martha, who died March 10, 1839 in Rutherford County. Four children are said to have survived the soldier, three of whom were still living as of 1856. The only child whose name appears in the file is their daughter, Evelina A., who married Arthur Erwin on January 18, 1825 in Rutherford County North Carolina. In 1885, Evelina A. Erwin was 85 years old and lived in Floyd County Georgia. J. W. Terrell, a grandson of Joel and Martha Terrell, in 1856 lived in Qualla Town, NC, and in 1856, another grandson, Charley Erwin, lived in Pleasant Growth, Forsyth County, Georgia.]
