Joel served in the Civil War in the 49th NY Vol. Infantry. He enlisted August 21 1861 and was discharged in October 18 1864.
From the 1870 U.S. Census it is assumed that he had a wife named Margaret, who would have been born about 1832, and his mother was living with them, Alma Eaton, born about 1807.
