Joel Dickson was born in Columbus, Ohio, Oct. 28, 1828, and died on Lake Chelan, Chelan Co, Wa., May 31, 1905. He was married to Miss M. A. Conklin of Pennsylvania, Sep. 16, 1848. He then moved to Colorado, where he engaged in the mining and stock business, which he followed until the spring of 1865, when he moved to Oregon, by the way of mule teams. He then engaged in the milling business, which he followed until the fall of 1888, when he came to Douglas Co, Wa., where he settled upon a homestead, improving and farming the same up to Jan. 6, 1898, when his beloved wife departed, leaving him heart broken.

Since then he has made his home with his son, O. F. Dickson, on the same old place, which was purchased by O. F. Dickson. He was the father of nine children, five of whom survive him, besides a grandson, Mr. Algernon Dickson, of Waterville, who was adopted when but a boy.

The following children survive him: J. H. Dickson, of Barlow, Ore.; Mrs. O. P. Mattoon, of Hebo, Ore.; Mrs. L. D. Harding, of Colfax, Wa.; Mrs. R. T. Lord, of Calexico, Ca.; O. F. Dickson, Chelan Falls, Wa.; and Algernon Dickson, grandson, Waterville, Wa.

Mr. Dickson was a man of sterling worth, but a few words – an honest, upright citizen, one whom all respected for his simple, straightforward, honest treatment of his fellow men. As a husband and father he was kind and affectionate, ever striving for the well being and comfort of his worthy companion and lived sons and daughters. His every day walk and conversation was a living exemplification of the Christ life and his example was sweet, pure and wholesome.

The afflicted family have the sympathy of the entire community in their great sorrow. Truly it can be said of our departed friend:

"Servant of God, well done; The glorious warfare's past,The battle fought, the race is won,And thou art crowned at last."

Joel was the son of Hiram Dickson and Elizabeth "Betsy" Hayward. He was married to Mercy Ann Conklin b. 1828 near Damascas, Pennsylvania.
