Joel Timothy Carney was born 14 July 1891 in Spring Place, Murray County, Georgia. His high school graduation was in 1908 from the Chatsworth School (p. 378 Murray County Heritage). He attended college at St. Bernard Preparatory School in Cullman, Alabama along with several of his brothers. According to the school records, Carl attended from Dec. 1913- Dec. 1914, William Henry from Dec. 1913 – Jun3 1917. William became a Benedictine monk (Frater Hubert) and died in the flue epidemic of 1918. About Joel, the data from the school is incomplete. All that is shown is April 1916 -June 1916 for sure. They showed a Joel Thomas Carney from 1914 – 1916.The school was chartered by the State of Alabama in February 1893, and though primarily a college preparatory school, including middle school grades, St. Bernard regularly conferred a few bachelor's degrees. Joel attended The University of Louisville School of Medicine, graduating in 1918. The Flexner report for the Carnegie foundation written in 1910 reformed medical education, closing many inferior medical schools and recommending a four year curriculum with two years of basic science training followed by two years of clinical education. I imagine those reforms took time and his medical school program was only two years. I do not know for sure. Joel’s wife, known as Sue, was a registered nurse. They married on December 31, 1918 in Louisville, Kentucky. Joel practiced in Batesville, Indiana and later moved to Jeffersonville, Indiana where the influx of wartime workers created a need for more doctors. A general practice physician, he made house calls and was once tied to a tree and robbed of the drugs in his medical bag, Joel and Sue raised three children: Mary Carolyn, Elizabeth and John. After moving from Batesville, Indiana to southern Indiana, Joel and Sue had a beautiful old house on Sparks Avenue in Jeffersonville, near the hospital and later moved to a smaller house in Clarksville in the Lincoln Heights neighborhood at 2602 Hollywood Boulevard. Joel had his office at 402-404 Spring Street.Joel delivered his four Morrison grandchildren. Joel was a raconteur par excellence and loved to enthrall his friends with jokes and his grandchildren with stories of Davy Crockett. He liked to play a card game called Joe Henry (a type of rummy). I wanted to remember his names for cards and, with help from my parents, I wrote them down – Ace – snake eyes, 2- nit, 3- lice, 4 – little Joe, 5 – fever from the south, 6 – sixty days in a working outhouse, 7 – walking cane or walking stick, 8 – eighter from Decatur or frog eyes, 9 – muckerheide, 10 – ten little Indians, Jack – hook, Queen of spaces – Gal from Birmingham, King – KKK. Joel died in Los Angeles, California on 4 March 1974. Sue died in Los Angeles a year later on 5 June 1975. --JMG 07:43, 3 December 2011 (EST)
