According to an IGI record, Jesse was the son of Jesse W. Alexander (1782-1844) and Rebecca Jane Ferguson (1781- ).

According to a descendant, Jesse and Eliza had 7 children: Francis C., 1838-ca 1866; Edwin H., 1839 -ca 1866; James L. 1837-1872; Marian R. 1847-ca 1866; John, 1849; Asher ~1850- ca 1866; and William Elliot 1857-1905. {Post-Em note from Nancy C. In the 1840 census for Carlisle, Nicholas Co., Kentucky, they are living between James D. and James Shankland, with 1 male 0-5 [Francis], 1 male 20-30 [Jesse] and 1 female 20-30 [Eliza]. {p.58, line 16}

In the 1850 census for Washington, Ripley Co., Indiana, Jesse and Eliza Alexander are living next door to [her brother?] John S. Stoops. Jesse is 39, born in Kentucky. Eliza is 33 and the children are Francis C. 12; Edwin H. 9; James 6; Marion 3 -- all born in Kentucky -- and (Asher?) 2/12, born in Ohio. {p. 320, household #185, family #186}

In the 1860 census for Elrod, Washington twp., Ripley Co., Indiana, Jesse Alexander is (40?), Eliza, 43, Francis (31?); Edwin, 19; James 16; Mariah, 13 (male?) -- all born Kentucky -- and Asher, 10; and William 3 -- both born in Indiana. {p.189, lines 3-10, #1356}

According to 'Indiana in the Civil War', he was commandent of 1st Brigade, 2nd Division, XVII Corps, Department of the Tennessee during the Civil war. In the 1870 census for Versailles p.o., Johnson twp., Ripley Co., Indiana, son James Alexander is a farmer, 33, born Kentucky with (wife?) Rebecca, 24, born Indiana; Elizabeth, 2; Annie, 1; and (brother?) William, 13 -- all born Indiana. {p.166, line 36-40, #149/160}

In the 1880 census for Ripley Co., Indiana, the only surviving child is Wm E. Alexander, 22 Indiana (parents Kentucky), farmer; with wife Eliza A. [Johnson] 21 IN (father PA, mother Virginia).
