COLLIER, 73, of Sidney, passed away Sunday, May 24, 2009 in Palmetto, FL. after a brief battle with lung cancer. He was born on August 31, 1935 in Bluffton, IN. the son of the late Harry and Arreta (Lloyd) Collier. Two brothers and one sister preceded him in death. One sister, Edith Dougherty of Bluffton, IN. survives. In 1955 he married Helene (Schortgen) Collier who preceded him in death on June 17, 1996. He is survived by three sons, Greg (Sarah) Collier and Galen Collier both of Sidney, OH. and Gary (Nancy) Collier of Dublin, OH. and one daughter, Graceann Simmons (Eric) of Magnolia, DE. He is also survived by his very special friend and companion for the last several years, Barb Geuy of Sidney, OH. and her children, Julie (Evan) Young of Greenville, MI. and Bob (Joni) Geuy of Sidney, OH. Also surviving are 6 grandchildren, and 5 step-grandchildren, and 2 great grandchildren. He graduated from Bluffton High School in 1953, and attended Purdue University before continuing his education in X-ray technology at Rochester University in New York at Strong Memorial Hospital. Upon graduation in 1957, he moved to Dayton, OH. and worked at Miami Valley Hospital for a short time before moving to Sidney, OH. and working at Wilson Memorial Hospital in charge of the X-ray department. During his career of 22 years at the hospital, he modernized the X-ray department and served as President of the Ohio Society of Radiological Technologists. He left Wilson Memorial Hospital to follow a career in metallurgy at Ross Aluminum Foundries, and retired from there in 1996. He was past commissioner of the Sidney Amateur Baseball Commission, past secretary of the Shelby County Bowling Association, member of the Sidney Lions Club, Moose Lodge, and Elks Lodge. He was a member of the Newport Sportsman's Club and was an avid trap shooter. He was a charter member of the VintCars Club of Sidney and enjoyed restoring vintage automobiles and Cushman Scooters. For the past 2 years he has been a member of the Imperial Lakes Estates community of Palmetto, Florida and been an active member of their community. Funeral Services will be held Friday May 29, 2009 at 10:30 A.M. at the Cromes Funeral Home with Rev. Jason Bedel officiating. Burial will be at Cedar Point Cemetery in Pasco, Ohio. Friends may call Thursday from 4 to 8 P.M. at the Cromes Funeral Home 302 S. Main Ave. In lieu of flowers donations can be made to Tidwell Hospice and Palliative Care, 4151 Mendoza Rd., Palmetto, FL. 34221, or the American Cancer Society in Jerry Collier's memory. Envelopes will be available at the funeral home. A memorial service will be held by the Sidney Elks Lodge on Thursday at 7:45 P.M. at the funeral home. |
