Jeremiah E. Arbogast was the son of Emmanuel Arbogast (1803-1879), a Justice in Pendleton and Highland Counties in Virginia, and his first wife, Jane Gum (1805-1837). (Gum) Sometime after 1840, the family settled at Crab Bottom in Highland County, near Doe Hill. He attended the University of Virginia in session 33 (1856-1857) and became a doctor. (Morton)

He married Mary J. Hidy (1 May 1836-9 Dec. 1906) on 12 Sep. 1856 in Highland County. (Virginia Marriages) The couple had two children, Carrie E. and William G. Arbogast. During the Civil War, Dr. Arbogast served as a Surgeon in the 14th Virginia Cavalry Regiment, CSA. He enlisted in June 1862, and was mustered out on 9 Apr. 1865 at Appomattox Court House. (Historical Data Systems) After the war, he continued his medical practice in Highland County. Jeremiah E. Arbogast was a charter member of Highland Masonic Lodge Number 110. (Grose)

On 4 Oct. 1895, the Highland Recorder reported “Dr. J. E. Arbogast, a prominent physician of Crabbottom, well and favorably known all over the country, met with an accident on last Sunday … He was on his way to see a patient when the accident occurred. When a short distance from home and near the Central church, his horse became unmanageable from some cause. It ran about a mile to the town of New Hampden, where one of the wheels of the cart struck a post which threw the doctor to the ground, the horse at the same time kicking him in the breast, which caused internal injuries from which he died.” (“A Fatal Accident”)

Jeremiah and Mary Arbogast are buried in Blue Grass Cemetery, in Highland County, Virginia.
