Funeral for Mrs. Scholten, Held Wednesday, Aug. 18. Funeral services were held Wednesday, August 18, at the First Reformed church of Sheldon for Mrs. E. J. Scholten, who died at 10:15 p.m.Sunday, August 15, at the Good Samaritan hospital, where she was taken for treatment for arthritis and heart disease. The church service at 1:30 p. m. followed a short service at 1 o'clock at the Soholten residence, 1045 East 6th St. Rev. Jean A. Vis, her pastor, officiated at both services and at the burial in East Lawn cemetery. Mrs. Ray Brandts and Mrs. Garrett Reekers sang "Jesus, Lover of My Soul," and "Dear to the Heart of God." Bearers were Dick Brouwer, Herman B. Oldenkamp, Otto Vander Pol, Jake Brouwer, Tunis Vogelaar and Marinus Sterk. Mrs. Scholten's last illness was of short duration, although she had suffered for some time from the arthritic condition. She died at the age of 66 years, 11 months and 22 days. Before her first marriage, Mrs. Scholten was Jennie De Jong, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Peter H. De Jong, and was born at Newkirk, Iowa, on August 23, 1881. She attended a country school in the Newkirk vicinity, and on March 12, 1902, she was married to Oscar Douma, now deceased. Eight sons and two daughters were born of this union. Her second marriage took place on August 23, 1934, to Evert J. Scholten, who survives. Other survivors include 10 children, three brothers and three sisters, 10 grandchildren, three step-children, eight step-grandchildren, and one step-great-grandchild. The children are Hattie, Mrs. Wm. Kleinwolterink of Sheldon; Edith, Mrs. Albert Veldboom of Hartley; Sadie, Mrs. Peter Van Oort of Hull; Minnie, Mrs. Ralph Vanden Brink of Sheldon; Jake Douma, of Archer; Jeanette, Mrs. Cornie De Hoogh. Julia, Mrs. Adrian De Hoogh, Nellie, Mrs. Ben Reeves, and Oscar Douma, all of Sheldon; and Esther, Mrs Carl Kuiper of Sanborn. The step-children are: Clara, Mrs. Gerrit Geusink [*Geurink] of Orange City; Esther Mrs. Art McCarty of McChord Field, Washington; and Kenneth Scholten of California. Brothers and sisters are: C. P. De Jong of Hospers, S. P. De Jong of Worthington, Minnesota; Mrs. Albert Beltman of Sanborn, Wm. P. De Jong of Orange City, Mrs. John Harmelink of Hospers, and Mrs. G. J. Beyer of Sheldon. Mrs. Scholten lived most of her life in the Newkirk and Sheldon vicinities and seven years ago moved to Sheldon to make her home.
