Family accounts of her birth tells that Jennie only weighed 2 pounds. They thought that she was still-born and placed the infant in a bread box and placed it on a shelf fo later internment; however, shortly afterward they heard a baby cry and the crying was coming from the bread box.
She made her home with her aunt and uncle Clara and Harry Thompson.
