Facts and Events
Married George Rushby at an early age. He died shortly after the birth of a son, her first child. Being very independent, as well as resourceful, she went into business making corsets and coats to support herself and her son. After being a widow for 18 years she met and married William Hough, a widower with six children. They had one child, Jemima, twenty years younger than her half-brother. He went to Australia to live and we have no record of him. When Jemima was two her mother was again left a widow, but well off because Mr. Hough owned the Pottery Mills. Through trickery, however, she was robbed of all her means. She went to Liverpool to find work and there became acquainted with the Mormon missionaries. In due time she joined the church and later took her daughter to America, settling first in St Louis, moving later to Nauvoo, and in 1852 going to Salt Lake City. She purchased a piece of land one block west of the Cedar Post. Although she had had many hardships and had lost her money, she showed thrift and determination and found a way to build an adobe house, though small, and planted a garden and some fruit trees. In due time she had strawberries, apples, and peaches, and made for herself and daughter an income from the sale of these. She was self supporting up to her death at 84. |
