REVOLUTIONARY WAR
Son of Robert and Charlotte Elizabeth Green Orr. Jehu married (1) Gilley Green on January 28, 1786, and (2) Jane Bucher Clinkscales on March 7, 1793.
"Jehu's first wife was a Miss Green of Pennsylvania, by whom he had four sons, double twins, and two daughters, and his second Jane B. Chickscales of South Carolina by whom he had one son, Christopher.
The DAR has Jehu listed as having served in the Calvary in NC and that he and his wife were pensioned.
Jehu moved to Craytonville, a thriving town in the early years of Anderson county and in 1817 took over a tavern which became known as Orr's Tavern. It's interesting to note that the same tavern had earlier been operated by Ann Hanks and her daughter, Nancy had been a barmaid there."
"A captain of Dragoons in the NC Cavalry, Jehu settled in what is now know as the Martin Township/Craytonville area of Anderson County. He lived in a two-story brick house which served as a tavern and inn for travelers in the days after the Revolution.
On the evening of February 12, 1827, a man named Uriah Sligh stopped to ask to spend the night at Orr's Tavern. After sharing some liquor and playing cards, Sligh and Orr got into an argument and Sligh shot Orr. Jehu died a little over a month later from his wounds.
The Feb 14th issue of Miller's Weekly in Pendleton stated: "Captain Jehu Orr, a respectable inhabitant of the district, was stabbed on Monday evening by a man we understand is Uraih Sligh. Captain Orr was not dead when last heard from, but the wound is supposed to be mortal. We have not heard any particulars of the affair, except that Sligh was intoxicated, and that the act was perpetrated in Captain Orr's house. Sligh has been committed to jail."
The April 4th edition: "The trial of Uriah Sligh, charged with murder of Jehu Orr, has been postponed."
December 5, 1827: "Uriah Sligh, who was sentenced to be hanged at this place for murder on the 14th, has been respited for two months by Governor Taylor." Sligh was hung on February 22, 1828, and said he did not recall killing Orr and extolled the evil of being intoxicated.
