Facts and Events
In Indian Documents Vol. 24, #203, pg. 23 is recorded a female J. E. Chastain died 1884 (husband died 1891, but no name recorded here ) with heirs John W. Chastine, son; H.T. Chastine, son; J.C. , dau. married to Claude G. Braught (#200); R.B. dau. married Dr. Eli James (#314). Claude G. Braught (#200) listed as owning 600 acres with 300 acres tilled before 11 Aug 1886. Also, Vol. 42, pg. 80 transcripts of a hearing on complaints about Cherokee Indian treatments, one witness stated that the President of the Cherokee Indian Citizens Assn. with over 1,500 family memberships, was C. G. Braught of Afton, OK. Later testimony claimed the membership number was larger, another claimed a smaller number. The purpose of the Assn. was to guard Cherokee Indian rights, but apparently had no govt. position or legal incorporation. I did not seek complete record of this hearing, just the page mentioning C. G. Braught. Also, see "Indian Blood" records where granddaughters, Judy E. and sister Cynthia A. had difficulty claiming their Cherokee blood citizenship, although they had lived as Indians and their Watts ancestors lived on Cherokee reservation in GA before civil war years. |
