Jefferson and his three sons William, Clifford and Louis came to Bowsman in 1899. They acquired a 99 year lease permit in Winnipeg to cut logs in the Porcupine Mountians. They eventually built a saw mill, planer, general store and hotel.

In 1919?, after the will, Clifford and Louis moved back east. They sold the store and hotel. Briggs and Clarence continued as partners. Briggs did the farming and Clarence ran the lumbering.

Briggs and Annie? Moved back east in 1930. They returned to Bowsman, where Clarence died in 1933.

Jefferson may have remarried to a Clara?

The following was written by Pauline Caverly in the 1970's. Jefferson Caverly and his three eldest sons, William, Cliff and Louis reached Boswman (from Madoc, Ont.) In 1899. Dad had come to Winnipeg earlier to acquire a long-term (99 yrs) permit to cut logs on the Porcupine Mountains. At Tent Town, near what is now Minitonas, they filed applications for a quarter section of land each. The Caverlys were able to get land just east of the Popcupines. The homestead is now owned by Mr. Joe Ashcroft. Mother (Agnes), Mabel 20, Briggs 13, Clarence 9, Laura 7 and Pauline 1 ½ came in 1901. Irene was born in 1902. By then the railroad had come a little past Bowsman. Our first home was a two-story log house near the river, and closely surrounded by trees on the other sides. There was a gradual slop to the (then narrows) river, and we had a big root cellar built into the bank. Dad, Will, Cliff and Lou were equal partners in the lumber operation, also the general store in Bowsman. Will and Cliff were with the lumbering, and Lou ran the store. None of them farmed. Dad bought Will and Lou's quarters and Cliff sold his to Mel Caverly. Briggs and Clarence started right at the start to farm. The first several years, Dad did the mill sawing every winter and the planer in the summer. Dad, Briggs and Clarence continued lumbering and farming. Dad died in 1922. The boys continued partners, but Clarence managed the lumbering and Briggs the farming. A few years later the two boys, Laura Scowcroft, Irene and I (Pauline) built, and ran a general store. Briggs moved to the apartment over the store. Clarence and Mother built houses in town. Since Annie, Brigg's wife, had never been reconciled to living out in the west, she wouldn't have a house built. They moved east in 1930, but had to return when Clarence died in 1933. Will Caverly went east to marry his fiancé, Alma Hinchcliffe. They lived a short time on the farm that Will had built. Rex was born there in 1902. Grace was born after they moved to town. Rex died in a car accident. Soon after Lou went back to marry Isabel Wright and they lived over the store until they built a house. They had two sons and a daughter, Kenneth, Harold and Rena. Cliff married Maude Helps Walters, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Abe Helps. Maude had married before, and had a daughter, Helen. Their family - Helen, Clinton, Hester, Stanton, Winona, Georgina, Josephine and Elba. Helen and Stanton are deceased. Mabel married Aaron Long. Ernie Long had the second frame house anywhere in the Bowsman District. The first was Richard Metcalf's. Ernie had poor health and died while the children were young. They were Russell, Wallace, Gladys, Willis and Marion. Willis (Bill) and Marion Jeffery are the only living members. Briggs married Annie Wright (Isabel's sister) in 1910. Briggs died in 1959 and Annie died in 1957. Laura married Thomas Scowcroft in 1914. Their daughter, Jean Leonhard lives in Burnaby, BC. Gordon Scowcroft loves in Toronto. Howard Scowcroft died a few years ago leaving a young son. Laura died in 1961 and Tom, her husband died a few year later. Clarence married Lucy Heal of Brandon in 1916. They had a son Jefferson and a daughter Agnes. Clarence died in 1933 and Lucy died in 1975. Mother died in 1960. Pauline continued to live in Bowsman. She cared for her mother until she passed away in 1960. Pauline is active in all community activities.

Irene Caverly married Herb Blackhall in 1928. Herb passed away in 1942. Their daughter Joan Lowey lives in Regina. Irene now lives in Saskatoon. Married by rev. F R Stratton at the home of Agnes's father in Belleville.

1881 Census - Jefferson 29, Hester 28, Eillie 7, Clifferce 5, Louis 3, Mabell 1.
