Facts and Events
Jean McDowell was born in Conococheague settlement in 1736. Her parents were emigrants from the North of Ireland, and came to Pennsylvania prior to 1730. Her father William McDowell remained in Chester county a few years but we hind him in 1733 seated upon a tract of land near Parnell's Know in the Cumberland Valley. Little is know of her early history, but it was probably during a temporary sojourn on or near the Susquehanna during the French and Indian war that she married in 1757 Archibald Irwin. He was the son of James Irwin, near neighbor of the McDowells. Who also came from the province of Ulster, Ireland and located in what was subsequently Peters township, Cumberland county. Archibald was probably born in Ireland in 1734.
