"Milicien" often appears as if it is part of his name, but more likely it refers to his profession: militiaman (a person serving in the militia). Given that one of his sons, Louis Antoine, became a Captain of cavalry in Napoleon's army gives this guess added weight. He was probably referred to as Milicien Cagnon. References
