From Sharon Molesworth: He was orphaned and bound out, but ran away to Sackett's Harbor, (the village of Sackets Harbor is in the Town of Hounsfield) Jefferson Co., NY. He lived variously in Jefferson and Cayuga Cos, NY. About 1814 they lived in Macedon, Wayne Co., NY; and later in Genesee Co., NY. In 1836, they moved to Rives Twp., Jackson Co., Mich. and before 1840 to Raisin Twp., Lenawee Co. In the 1850 census they were in Palmyra Twp.,Lenawee Co., with Darius, age 11, b. MI. Memoirs of Lenawee Co p 498--Ashley R says Jared was of English birth and that he spent time in Jackson Co., MI prior to living in Raisin Twp. that he was a shoemaker by trade and later a tanner [edit] ==============from Pioneers of Macedon (NY) (Wayne County, near Palmyra) THE TANNERY dwelling that was once the tannery located at forks in road about 1 mile west Of Macedon Center--north side of the road and partly onto the side of the hill. first built and owned by Jared Calkins prior to 1825. He was an Orthodox Quaker and stammered. Isaac Dean succeeded him in 1825 destroyed by fire in 1845, all that remains are stones of the cellar wall.
