He was a farmer who occupied the land of his father, Joshua Baker III. This is the same land his son Daniel lived on and farmed. He was a farmer in good standing throughout the entire Revolutionary War, but did not serve. The Federal Census of 1790 lists him there with himself, wife and two sons over 16 years of age.

He had a near kinsman, Joshua Baker, who was a private soldier from Pomfret, Connecticut from 1777 to 1781 and was in a list of"prisoners carried off by the British in Benedict Arnold's attack on Fort Griswold, New London, September 6, 1781. He was also a Revolutionary pensioner residing in New London County
