Janet Davis was the daughter of Robert and Elizabeth Davis. The family immigrated from King's County, New York to Adolphustown, Upper Canada (now Ontario) in the 1780s or early 1790s. In 1793 Janet married Guillaume Demorest, who had been teaching at Adolphustown for two years. In the spring of 1794, the "newly wedded couple moved to Prince Edward County ... having purchased the previous year, from the Government, lots 38 and 39, 1st concession, of Sophiasburg. Here a village soon sprang up and was named after its founder, Demorestville."
