Alexander MCGREGOR was born 14jul1796 and died 30dec1853 (A Genealogical and Heraldic Dictionary of the Landed Gentry of Great Britain and Ireland (1863)); he died 20dec1853 (matriculation albums of Glasgow University). Alexander married (1) 7mar1826 Janet Stephenson BENNETT (d. 1jun1827), daughter of late William Bennett of Moore Place, Glasgow, and (2) Mary Cusine WEDDERSPOON (b. 1814, d. 1862) daughter of William Wedderspoon of Tayside, Perth solicitor (Landed Gentry book). Janet was b. 31jul1800 at Glasgow, daughter of William Bennet and Margaret Orr (IGI). William Bennett (d. 1832), insurance broker and underwriter, founder of Bennett and Gordon, now Bennett, Browne and Co. married Margaret Orr (catalogue, Old Glasgow Exhibition). In 1801 PO directory: William Bennet, insurance broker, NW corner of St. Andrews Sq. PO dir 1811 and 1820: W. Bennet and Co., insurance brokers, 185 Exchange. PO dir 1831: William Bennett, 2 Moore Pl., of Bennett and Browne, insurance brokers, 126 Queen St. A portrait by John Graham Gilbert was lent by Mrs. M’Grigor of the son of Alex, Alexander M’Grigor of Kernock (1796 Glasgow-1853 Glasgow), writer, who married (1) 1826, Janet Stevenson, dau of William Bennett, and (2) 1832, Mary Cusine, dau of William Wedderspoon of Tayside. Alex had issue by both marriages (Old Glasgow Exhibition). A portrait of William Bennett by Augustin Edouart was lent to Old Glasgow Exhibition by R. Bennett Browne. William Bennett (d. 1832), insurance broker and underwriter, founder of Bennett and Gordon, now Bennett, Browne and Co. married Margaret Orr (Exhibition).
